Easy & Budget Friendly DIY Halloween Crafts and Decorations for Your Home
Spooky season is here! Arguably the best season of the year. My favorite fall activity is getting my home cozy and creepy. Here are 3 easy and budget friendly DIY halloween decorations you can create for your home.
Faux Drip Flameless Candle
Want that creepy drip candle look without dealing with the wax spill or actually having an open flame? Here’s a great way to bypass the mess and the flame!
Things you’ll need:
Some sort of votem or vessel. (I got mine from the dollar store)
Black spray paint
Battery operated tea light (also from dollar store)
Cardboard
Here’s how to make it:
Create tiered drips on your votem using your hot glue gun. It helps if you have your votem sitting right side up, so you can use gravity to your advantage. You can create smaller drips from releasing less glue from your glue gun. And create larger, longer drips by pulling the trigger all the way down on your glue gun and releasing as much glue as possible.
Once you have worked your way around the whole votem, let the hot glue dry. This should only take a few minutes
Take your cardboard and cut a circle that is the same size as the opening of your votem. I did this by tracing the opening of the votem onto the cardboard. Then poke a hole in the center of the cardboard. (This will be the opening to feed your tea light through later on).
Once you have your cut out cardboard and dry votem, spray paint them both black. Tip: Multiple, light coats is the best way to get even coverage with spray paint.
Once dry, you can insert the tea light into the cardboard cut out and place the cardboard in the opening of your votem.
Light up your tea light and enjoy!
Faux Stone Jack-o-lantern
Making jack-o-lanterns is fun and an easy way to set a theme of the space with the design you create. But it can be a bummer when your real pumpkin dies at the end of the season and you won’t have it for next year. Here is a fun, earthy twist on a traditional jack-o-lantern.
Things you’ll need:
Pencil or poking tool
Optional: template or stencil
Here’s how to make it:
Create your design on your pumpkin. You can freehand or use a template. If you are using a template, just poke straight through your template, creating tiny marks along the outline of your template. Once the template is removed, you’ll be left with an outline of your design that you can follow.
Using your rotary tool, you can cut or engrave the design into the pumpkin. I chose to do a mixture of both. The great thing about using a rotary tool, is that it makes quick work of the task and the multiple attachments give so many options on the finish of the design.
Once your happy with your design, spray a few light layers of spray stone texture on the jack-o-lantern
Let dry overnight and enjoy! You can stick a battery tea light to set the spooky mood.
3D Spider Wood Sign
I love me a good wood sign for the fall! Here is an easy way to create your own with dimension and a fun twist.
Things you’ll need:
Plywood or MDF piece cut to your desired dimensions. Mine was 14” tall by 9” wide.
Frame pieces cut to size to fit your background.
Desired paint color for your background. I used Behr Paint in Maple Glaze.
Desired stain color for your frame. I used Varathane Briar Smoke.
Mini faux spiders. I found mine at the dollar store.
* Additional Idea: You can use whatever spooky item you would like. I saw mini faux bats, eyeballs and other creepy crawlies at my dollar store.
Here’s how to make it:
Paint your background your desired color and stain your frame.
Once dry, nail the frame to your background. The great thing about a pin nailer is that you can’t see nor need to fill any nail holes. (*Tip: You can also hot glue your frame instead. Just be mindful of hot glue oozing out the sides)
Using your hot glue gun, apply glue to the underside of the spider and quickly stick the spider to the background.
Continue applying spiders until you are happy with the amount and placements.
